Innovative
Approach

To address oral function skill development, Yichien uses an innovative, integrated method that supports:

  •  Neurodevelopment

  •  Neuromuscular readiness

  •  Oral Motor Learning

  •  Parent coaching

Based on years of clinical experience, Yichien combines modalities to match each child's unique neurodevelopmental needs, oral history, sensory profile, and emerging strengths.

This individualized approach supports reflex maturation, builds foundational eating skills of chewing and swallowing, and provides safe, developmentally-aligned opportunities for children to practice eating while incorporating tools and textures specifically for their current readiness.

Treatment
Modalities

Reflex Integration

A developmental approach that looks at retained or under-integrated developmental reflexes (primitive or primary reflexes) and uses gentle, purposeful movement patterns to support nervous system organization, posture, regulation, and readiness for oral motor skill development.

Neurodevelopmental Intervention builds the foundational body and nervous-system control needed for speech and feeding by addressing alignment, sensory-motor coordination, breathing support, and the child's ability to organize movement before practicing higher-level oral skills.

NMES

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is a  non-invasive support that uses gentle electrical current during feeding and swallowing practice to help activate the muscles involved in oral motor control, swallowing coordination, endurance, and sensory feedback.

Neuromuscular Intervention supports muscle training by pairing stimulation with active exercises, food practice, and swallowing tasks so the child can build more efficient movement patterns for speaking, eating, and drinking.

Parents carry strategies and techniques from the treatment room to home to lead their child in positive oral experiences. Consistent practice of applicable therapeutic techniques on the part of parents and caregivers supports the foundation upon which feeding and communication skills can build.

Oral Skills Training

Therapist-led oral practice is structured and individualized in a safe, supported environment to help the child apply developmentally-appropriate oral motor skills to increase lip closure, chewing, swallowing strength, sound production, and meaningful vocalization.

Targeted oral skills training utilizes carefully-selected oral skills tasks based on the safest texture, consistency, and amount for the child's current abilities, allowing oral skills to develop through small, supported steps toward more complex eating experiences.

Individualized Parent Coaching

Through Yichien's expert coaching, parents become empowered to guide their child's feeding and speech development with consistent routines, clear boundaries, appropriate eating tasks, and responsive support. They learn how to follow their child's cues, adjust the pace and level of support, and help the child build confidence, regulation, and functional skills within familiar family routines.
